Vaani Privacy Policy
Effective date: 31 August 2026
Vaani is a Chrome extension that reads a web page you choose and plays it back as spoken narration. This policy describes exactly what data Vaani handles, where it goes, and what it never touches. Every statement here matches what the code actually does.
Who we are
Vaani is operated by RapiLabs (UDYAM registration UDYAM-BR-20-0078490). Contact: hello@tryvaani.com.
What we collect and store
Account data
When you sign in with Google, we receive from your Google ID token your Google
account identifier (sub), your email address, and your display name. We request
only the basic sign-in scopes openid, email, and profile — nothing else
from your Google account. This account data is stored until you ask us to delete
it.
Session
When you sign in we create a session token. On our server it is stored only as a SHA-256 hash, never in the clear, and it is valid for 30 days.
Page content — the honest paragraph
When you press play, the extension reads the text of the page in the active tab and sends those passages to Vaani’s server, which sends them to:
- Anthropic (Claude) to rewrite the passages as narration, and
- OpenAI (
gpt-4o-mini-tts) to turn that narration into speech.
This happens only for the page you started, only when you start it, and never in the background.
What we never send
We never send the URL of the page, your browsing history, or the pages you did not press play on. Vaani’s server receives only the passages to be narrated together with your chosen guide and language settings — nothing that identifies which site or address you are on. The place you stopped on a page is remembered locally in your own browser, not on our server.
Cache shared across users
Generated narration and audio are stored on our server under a SHA-256 hash of the content and settings. These cached artifacts are not linked to any account, and they are shared between users so that identical content is generated only once. This means a cache entry derived from text on a page you listened to may be served to another user who listens to the same content. Any cache entry can be purged on request.
Usage counters and limits
For each request we store the account, the request type (script, audio, or preview), whether it was served from cache, a character count, an audio duration, and a timestamp. We store counts, never the text itself. These counters exist to enforce daily limits and control cost:
- Narration: up to 300,000 characters per account per UTC day.
- Audio: up to 150,000 characters per account per UTC day.
Both limits reset at UTC midnight. Replays and anything already generated do not count against your limit — only newly generated content does. Some plans also meter Hindi and Hinglish narration in minutes per month; these counters are what the server uses to apply your plan’s limits.
Preferences
Your chosen guide, voice, language, and accent are stored on your account so they persist across sessions.
Logs and infrastructure
When access logging is enabled, our server records only the request method, path, and timestamp of a request — no account identifier and no page content. Our hosting provider (Railway) and our website host (Cloudflare) process connection metadata, including IP addresses, in the ordinary course of serving traffic. Vaani uses no analytics, no cookies, and no trackers on either the extension or the website.
Processors we use
- Anthropic PBC — narration rewriting.
- OpenAI — text-to-speech.
- Google LLC — sign-in.
- Railway — server hosting.
- Cloudflare — website hosting and DNS.
Each processor handles data under its own terms of service; we do not assert retention periods on their behalf.
Retention and deletion
- Account data and usage counters: kept until you request deletion.
- Sessions: 30 days.
- Cached content-hashed artifacts: kept until purged.
Deletion is by email to hello@tryvaani.com and is performed manually. There is no self-serve delete button in the extension.
Children
Vaani is not directed at children.
Changes to this policy
